Philosophy

We believe that the college search, application, and decision-making process should be student-focused, incorporating the Ignatian practices of reflection and discernment. We strive to educate in an ever-changing college and career landscape. By setting goals, we are able to strategize how to best optimize performance and potential while navigating innumerable opportunities and competitive processes.
The process at St. Joseph's Prep will create choices and opportunities where families can discern the best path in front of them. The Office of College Counseling serves to prepare students in partnership with families for the world they will enter into after their time at 17th & Girard.

Practice

Every student is assigned a college counselor and will receive programming that is age and grade specific. College counselors meet with students and families in seminars, workshops, and, most importantly, on an individual basis to help to ensure students and families are informed of current research, trends, and practices. Formalized programming begins in the student’s freshman year and increases in frequency and offerings by senior year. Some programming is open to all students and families regardless of grade; this is including, but not limited to: College visits, Financial Aid presentation(s), Parent Panels, and seminars focusing on a wide range of post-secondary topics.

Role

The College Counselor’s role is not only to help the student identify schools that meet their needs, navigate the application process, and decide what school to attend; but to inform and affirm who they are as people and point them toward opportunities after high school that will stretch them spiritually, intellectually, and encourage a sense of agency.

Procedures for Testing Days

  • All exams will take place between May 6th and May 17th unless communicated otherwise due to conflict.
  • Arrival is 20 minutes prior to exam. Timed portion of the exams will begin promptly at 8:20 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Note that once the exams begin and doors close, students will not be admitted into the testing room and unable to take the exam that day.
  • When a student is scheduled to take an exam, the individual is exempt from classes both before and after the exam.
  • Students should report to the hallway outside of the James "Mace" Thompson '59 Athletic Center to check in for their exam. They will be assigned a room and seat number upon check in. Students with CollegeBoard approved testing accommodations will be sent to a separate space to meet their accommodation requirements.
  • All students are expected to bring a #2 pencil, pen (for any exam with a free response/essay sections), Chromebook if applicable, and approved calculator if applicable.
  • Students have access to help resources on the AP classroom account through CollegeBoard to best prepare for testing.
  • The dress code for exams is casual/dress down.
  • Buses will run on a normal schedule.
  • Sauter Dining Hall will operate on a normal schedule. Students may bring snacks for testing breaks.
Important Notes

  • If a student is taking an AP class, they are required to take the AP exam as outlined in the Program of Studies. Makeup Exams are only offered in the event of a documented illness and/or family emergency. If a student is sick the day of the exam, parents are required to complete Student Absent Form. A fee for late testing may be applied in certain circumstances.
  • If a student at any point prior to an AP exam experiences a temporary injury that may impact their ability to read, write, or type, they should contact their guidance counselor immediately as temporary accommodations for testing must be submitted and approved by the CollegeBoard in order to administer the exam appropriately. Paperwork from doctor may be required.
